STANDARDS FOR SUBJECT MATTER KNOWLEDGE

Command of the English language, oral and written, at a level of proficiency set by the Board
Research and theories of second language acquisition at different age levels
61.913 Current Issues in Second Language Acquisition
Linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of English, other languages, and language variations
61.901 Language Structure: Phonetics and Morphology and
61.902 Language Structure:Syntax, Semantics, and Pragmatics
Theories and methods of instruction in reading and writing in a second language, including content-based language teaching, sheltered subject matter teaching, combining the four language skills, and interactive approaches
61.950 Reading/ Writing for the Teaching of ESL
Knowledge of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for mathematics, science, English language arts, and history and social sciences at the appropriate level
61.955 Advanced Instructional Techniques in the Teaching of Foreign/Second languages
Language assessment procedures and instruments: selection, administration, and interpretation (through 61.950, 61.955, and 61.966)
Historical and legal bases for ESL and bilingual education
61.924 Language Planning and Education
Fluency at an intermediate level in a language other than English

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The three core education courses and two ESL courses should precede professional courses in Education. The core education courses and ESL courses may be taken in any order. They are:

14.002 Field Study in education
(any two ESL courses from the list above)

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION COURSES
14.318 Professional preparation and Field Study II
14.425 (pre-K to grade 8) or 14.427 (grades 5-12) Student Teaching Practicum
(remaining four ESL courses)
